What is mineral water?

There are many bottled waters: some are called drinking waters, some are table waters, some are mineral waters. We have already written about how bottled water is produced before, today we will focus on its composition and when, why and how much you can drink it.

Let us first get acquainted with the very concept of mineral water. The answer to this question lies in the name itself – the mineral water contains certain minerals in a certain amount, which is also important.

Mineral waters are not only used for drinking, but they can also be used for baths, compresses, etc. In this material we will talk about drinking water.

Bottled Water Classification

Table or common drinking water contains no more than 1 g or 1000 mg of dissolved salts per liter; the amount of calcium, magnesium, sodium and other minerals in it is also carefully controlled, so it can be consumed daily. Its composition is regulated by sanitary standards for drinking water.

Distilled Water vs Mineral Water vs Purified Water

Mineral and table waters contain from 1 to 10 g/l of salts, or contain more than one component in excess of the following. Consumption of such waters is not strictly limited, but their systemic use is not recommended.

Mineral waters contain more than 10 g/l of salts and their consumption is strictly limited. These waters are not recommended to drink without a doctor’s prescription, and you probably will not find them in stores or pharmacies.

What are the mineral waters??

The composition of minerals dissolved in water plays a very important role, so mineral and mineral-drinking waters are classified precisely by the salt composition. Thus, the main anions are chloride (Cl – ), hydrocarbonate (HCO3 – ), sulfate (SO4 2- ), and by cations – sodium (Na + ), calcium (Ca 2+ ) and magnesium (Mg 2+ ) waters.

Also the waters are classified by gas composition and specific elements: carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, bromine, iodine, silicon, etc.

Each water is suitable for therapeutic purposes under certain conditions, and where one can help, the other will harm. This explains the medical recommendations for limited consumption of even table mineral waters.

Mineral Waters of Ukraine

Our country is characterized by a large number of spas, which are located on the mineral springs. A total of over 500 different springs have been identified, some of them are very popular, others less so, but each area has its own mineral water. Let’s try to talk briefly about the main of them, and then move on to bottled waters, which can be found in stores.

The richest in the mineral springs is the Lviv region, in total there are about a hundred of them, and they have a diverse composition. The most popular resorts are Morshyn, Truskavets and Skhodnitsa.

In Truskavets there are such sources:

  • “Naftusya” is low-mineralized water (0.7 g/l), which belongs to the hydrocarbonate-sulfate-calcium-magnesium waters, it also contains many organic substances of oil origin, it is used to treat diseases of the urinary tract.
  • “Maria” is chloride-sulfate, sodium water with mineralization from 2.68 to 8.62 g/l. It also contains silicic acid and iron, and is naturally carbonated. It is used in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • “Sofia” – chloride-sodium-calcium-magnesium water with a total salt content of 8 – 12 g/l, it is also used for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

These are the main springs that are used for drinking, while the others are usually used for baths and other procedures.

In Morshyn there are three therapeutic springs:

mineral water

  • № 1 – chloride-sulfate-sodium-potassium-magnesium water and №6 – magnesium-potassium water with a low content of sodium chloride, used in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • No. 4 is low mineralization hydrocarbonate-calcium water, which is the source for bottled Morshynska water bottling. This is table water with optimal mineral composition.

In Skhodnitsa also a lot of mineral waters, currently there are 38 springs, but only ten are available for consumption. In general you can find there the same compositions of water that you find in Truskavets or Morshin.

The second area with water springs is Zakarpattya.

One of the old and famous resorts Shayans. There are hydro carbonate-sodium waters, which are mainly used for treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, and chloride-carbonate waters, which are used for urological diseases. Svalyava, Polyana and other waters are not as popular as spa waters.

In general, despite the fact that the most popular are the western resorts, as we wrote above, you can find mineral waters in Ukraine in any area. Sometimes there are even little-known and unpopular resorts.

Bottled mineral water

Mineral Water. This is what we used to call the bottled water. Not all bottled water will actually be mineral water. Some of it is simply purified by reverse osmosis and packaged. Below we will talk about the most popular waters, which can be found on the shelves of supermarkets.

What is “Borjomi”??

This natural sodium bicarbonate mineral water, which is poured in the mountains of Georgia on the territory of Borjomi reserve. It is recommended for the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, refers to the mineral table water. This water is packed into 0.33 and 0.5 liter glass bottles, the usual PET bottles of 0.5, 1 and 1.25 liters, as well as into tin cans.

Bottled Mineral Waters of Ukraine

These alkaline mineral waters of Ukraine are very popular. “Luzhanskaya” – This water is extracted in the Transcarpathian region in an area called “Lugi”, its composition is bicarbonate-sodium, it contains low concentrations of boron, it is compared to “Borjomi. There are two varieties of this water: “4” and “7”, the sources are located 400 meters away from each other. The first contains more calcium and magnesium, the second contains more zinc, iron, bromine, boron and barium, many elements significantly exceed the allowable values for drinking water.

“Polyana Kvasova.”, which is extracted nearby, also has a bicarbonate-sodium composition, it has less calcium and magnesium, but more boron.

“Mirgorodskaya.” – is chloride-sulfate-sodium water, which is produced in the city of the same name in Poltava region.
